Obama's faux pas was so offensive because it followed so soon after Sarah Palin's funny analogy between a pit bull and a hockey mom. Obviously, Obama saw her speech and was familiar with her joke, so when he mentioned lipstick, it resonated with his audience. They got it, laughed, applauded, and enjoyed Obama's implication that Sarah Palin was a pig. Obama's denial that he had said anything offensive, insisting that the whole outrage was manufactured, was his second mistake.
