Jakarta clinic extols tobacco as cancer cure

A medical clinic in Indonesia has made the seemingly counter-intuitive claim that smoking tobacco can cure cancer and other diseases.

The unusual treatment, which consists of puffing cigarettes or blowing smoke in patients' ears, is said to cleanse the body of the carcinogenic element mercury.

Al-Jazeera's Step Vaessen reports from the Indonesian capital.

Smoking creates pyrolysis products called aromatic hydrocarbons which r carcinogens, but if tobacco is NOT smoked it won't have these unless its fire cured (the wood smoke absorbs into the leaves!) Curing and fermenting tobacco chemically changes the alkaloids to carcinogenic nitrosamines (TSNAs), BUT fresh uncured tobacco is virtually free of these and they are in TRACE amounts. It is the uncured NON-SMOKED form of tobacco that contains the ANTICANCER CEMBRANOIDS which show medical potential.

Cembranoids are found naturally in tobacco and can cure cancer, but the risk of mouth cancer negates this positive effect.

Ironically, Tobacco does have powerful anti-cancer properties, they are called cembranoids and they are found in uncured tobacco. But that doesn't mean it is a guaranteed cure for cancer, nor does it mean that you should smoke it. Research on them is only beginning, but it is very exciting!
