This was the second ending planned. In the first script (ending rejected by disney studios) the parents remain seperated. They shot a different ending and showed this version of the film to test screen audiences and the Disney studios alike. The screen audiences thought it "didn't have the right feeling" and the Disney studios claimed it was "Too realistic for a disney effort"

@NY339 This movie is corny as shit. Come the fuck on, Quaid's assistant and Richardson's Butler get together. Solely because the writers found it amusing that "the help" get married. My parents are divorced and the likelihood of divorcees getting back together is slim/ This movie is unrealistic, stereotypical, and only enjoyable by the annoying wealthy white suburban grade school kids it's targeted to.
