Hey,

This is a video of my Irish medley for the upcoming "Irish-American Heritage Month" event that I'll be fiddling at. I used a simple looped drone (A) and then played Scarborough Fair into Foggy Dew into Londonderry Air. I like how the whole mood changes when I start Londonderry Air (known to most as "Danny Boy"). This is a pretty good video.

The audio isn't great, so you can't hear the drone very well at the very beginning, but it's there just enough. Also, I messed up a few times in Foggy Dew (for some odd reason that song always manages to give me a heck of a time). But, it's overall pretty good.

Enjoy, and tell me what you think!

Hi there. It's by the company called the "Electric Violin Lutherie" or "EVL" for short. They make all kinds of great violins. Mine is the classic body shape with five strings and the Schatten pickup. It's a great instrument for sure!!

    Thanks for the kind comments!

  • Scarborough fair is an olde English folk tune, it's not Irish. But that is in no way a criticism, this was awesome.

  • I wondered, because it doesn't sound particularly Irish, but it seemed like an appropriate song to toss in, so thanks.

  • awesome!

  • I highly agree!

  • I've found that learning harmony theory helps me with playing melody. Walter Piston talks about the meaning of each of the intervals. Taking a piece off the major third bastardizes the melody, creating a feeling of disappointment. Taking a piece off the sixth and seventh makes it consistent. When you put the pieces back, there's a resoluteness that allows the singer to express strong emotion.

When a tune is about to make that transition, you incorporate that drama as you play.

  • I learned Scarborough fair and now I can't stop playing it. It's a great song!

  • Thanks very much for this. I'm learning Londonderry Aire and Foggy Dew and well heck, I might as well learn scarborough fair too.

    Very nice!
