We have one of these, but from an instrument store. It looks exactly like this one, even the design. But it's a tube. One side with a drum, other has nothing. The tube is hollow. Then, on the drum end is a spring. When you shake the tube, the spring hits the drum, which sends vibrations out the other end. Then, since the spring keeps wiggling, it keeps on hitting the drum repeatedly.

@EducateInnovate if you dont touch it with your hand and just let it touch a hard surface (f.e. the floor) it sounds much better,like a real thunder.

Doesn't sound like thunder to me. I recognize the sound for some stage effects but not what I would call thunder.
