  • if at position 5:36, if black plays rook g8, is this a good move?

  • @sirgator2099

I think Rg8 at 5:36 was definitely an option for Smeets, yes.

Rybka gives no more than equality for Shirov after 33.Qh4 Bxf2+! etc

  • @oakley99

Thanks for correcting that mistake at 7:04

Indeed, after Bxe5 Qxe5 black is mated in a few moves

  • Interesting game and great analysis, thanks.

It's easy to forget that Smeets is among the hundred best players in the world, not exactly someone you want to gamble against. Shirov is obviously a genius.

  • Thanks for the analysis!.. Shirov is certainly one of my favourite players out there...

I wonder if Smeets was in time trouble towards the end; maybe that explains some of the moves...

  • At 7:04 you mention that Smeets can't take the knight with the bishop because it's pinned to the Q. But that's not the reason. If the bishop takes the white knight, the white queen recaptures and it's mate in 2 from there.

  • Thanks for the video and commentary. You did a nice job of explaining the game and the missed opportunities. Great stuff Claus.

  • Nice game!
