This is a very rare 'novelty' recording; most of people even never heard about this recording before. Shirley Temple, the all-time great child actress, sings two famous Japanese nursery rhymes, "Yuyake Koyake (夕焼け小焼け)", and "Kutsu ga naru (靴が鳴る)", in Japanese. Recorded on March 11th, 1937, at Japan Polydor Studio at Tokyo, Japan. Temple was briefly visiting Japan for promoting her film "Dimples". Despite the fact she learned the lyrics phonetically, there's basically no errors on pronounciations; and it is pretty astonishing for a 9 year-old girl.

This record had very few circulations; it was only released in Japan, and after WWII broke up, the Japanese government prohibited listening records made by any 'American enemies', so it is even rare in Japan.

I had a chance to have this record in my collection ; one of those belonged to my grandfather. Sadly, when I recently tried to record this thing with on my HMV 102, the record literally exploded on the turntable. (There was a big crater caused by dropping the needle on the surface, and I didn't noticed it.) Fortunately, I made a copy of this record by using cassette tape several years ago (although the quality isn't so great), so I'm now offering this rarity to the fellow YouTubers.

  • I'd heard about Shirley doing these, but I'd never heard one until now. It's amazing how everything just seemed to come naturally to her! Was there anything Shirley couldn't do? Thanks for sharing this with us, it's very special.

  • Love - Shirley Temple - Thanks so much for uploading!

  • I used to sing "Yuyake Koyake" when I was a youngster many, many moons ago! What wonderful memories it brought to hear this again--I can still remember most of the words but can't remember what I had for dinner last night!

  • engl.: Well, that would answer the question, why there´s written DTSCH, aund Orchester in german language. And i think there´s the amerikan akzent in "Shirleys" speech. Maybe it will be a little bit too early for the Bauschke orchestre for recording with Lahrmann!

  • @CMarkulis Hallo hier singt Carmen Lahrmann ! Und nicht Shirley Temple. Sie hat 1936 - 4 Aufnahmen für den Japanischen Markt (Phonetisch) eingesungen. Das Orchester konnte ich leider noch nicht ermitteln.

  • Thanks for sharing this special record. One question about it: why is there written in german language "mit Orchester" (with orchester)??

  • A great rarity. Thanks for sharing!

  • Wow this is great

    What a beautiful gift!!
