My last railfanning trip of 2010 includes activity from several different railroads as I met up with Justin (Trainmasterkreks) on a sunny and relatively mild but windy winter's day.

Train #1: CP 199 WB intermodal/autorack, 8:31 AM, CR T east of Columbus
CEFX 1056 (AC4400CW)
CP 8736 (ES44AC)

Train #2-A: UP LPA-18 Jefferson branch local, 9:07 AM, Clyman Junction
UP 710 (GP38-2)

Train #3: CP 39? EB unit grain, 9:36 AM, Watertown diamond
CP 8721 (ES44AC)
CP 9655 (AC4400CW)

This ES44AC, one of the first batch delivered to CP, has a nice sounding mechanical or as I like to say, "real" bell.

Train #2-B: UP LPA-18, 10:43 AM, Watertown diamond

710 has made a one-car pickup at Clyman Junction and is making its way south on the branch line.

Train #2-C: UP LPA-18, 11:09 AM, Johnson Creek

The engineer on 710 gives a healthy dose of P3 for the two grade crossings in this small town as the one-car local rattles through, making about top speed for this line.

Train #4-A: CP 283 WB manifest, 12:09 PM, 3rd Street, Watertown
CP 8835 (ES44AC)
CEFX 3160 (SD40-2)
CP 8882 (ES44AC)
SOO 6054 (SD60)

Train #5: CP G67 local WB, 12:30 PM, 3rd Street, Watertown
SOO 4426 (GP38-2)
CP 4618 (GP40)

Train #6: CP 299 WB manifest, 1:30 PM, Welsh Road, west of Watertown
CP 5924 (SD40-2)
CP 9653 (AC4400CW)

Train #7: Amtrak 8 eastbound Empire Builder, 3:26 PM, Welsh Road
AMTK 60 (P42DC)
AMTK 117 (P42DC)
AMTK 1 (P42DC)

Fashionably late as usual.

Train #4-B: CP 283 WB manifest, 3:34 PM, Welsh Road

About to expire on their hours of service, the previous crew tied the train down on main track #1 here. A new crew was cabbed in and arrived shortly before Amtrak #8 did, and didn't waste much time getting the train moving again.

Train #8: CP 281 WB manifest, 4:01 PM, Welsh Road
CP 8574 (AC4400CW)
CP 5947 (SD40-2)

Train #9: WSOR L/Y4?? Madison local job, 4:52 PM, Cottage Grove
WSOR 4006 (SD40-2)
WSOR 4009 (SD40-2)

On my way home, I turned the scanner back on as I prepared to cross over the WSOR tracks on Highway N in Cottage Grove on the off chance that it would pick up on something. Sure enough, it was getting a FRED chirrup, so I turned onto a road that paralleled the tracks and found this odd-looking train consisting of two SD40-2s long-hood forward, and two tank cars. They were just starting back up after the conductor lined the derail so they could get into town.

  • what horn is that

  • @megs905 On which train?

  • That's an interesting bell ringing on the 8721 (3rd train). It sounds as though it is mechanical instead of the standard electronic bell sound I am accustomed to hearing on newer GEs.

  • @bbuck1003 Sure is! That's why I'm partial to the first order of ES44ACs delivered to CP. They (50 locomotives I believe, 8700-8749) shipped with real bells. All the others since (8750-8899) have electronics.
