Where is this in Japan? City, prefecture? Are there this many deer all over Japan or just this area?

@jedirifleman This spot is on Hokkaido island in Japan. The mainland has deer too. But this over population is only the issue of Hokkaido I think. Hokkaido is the northern part of Japan. Thanks.

@jedirifleman I live on Hokkaido island and after 4 hour drive from my house there are lots of deer. Of course in one hour drive before my work in the morning I can get a deer. I hunt 60 days in 5 month hunting season. We have no limit for the number of deer hunted in a season although we have a rule one stag a day. So I got 50 stag and 15 doe last season. Thanks.

for your safety when you are in the bear mountains, you should buy a JetScream whistle. its a very high-pitched whistle you keep on a keychain, and the high frequency hurts the bears ears. a bears hearing is more acute than dogs, so is his smell, thats why pepper spray also does damage, like you said. @virtuovice Yes M95 is not a chopper but available for batonning as well as ESEE6. You can carry folding saw for 6" trees and a bit longer camp knife for light chopping. I don't think that I can fight against bear with any knives, but length and thrusting performance, and lightweight would be very important at such time IMHO.
