On the 17th February 2010, I visited the Didcot Railway Centre in Didcot (Oxfordshire) for the first time. After catching the train (and my first time on a HST). I spent around 5 hours at the centre with Joshua Evans (JBTEvans) on there halve term mid week steam day.
Running on the demonstration mainline was GWR 2-6-0 Mogul 5322, painted in its Railway Operating Division (ROD) livery, which it carried in World War One whilst it was stationed in France for the war effort. Running behind the Mogul was two GWR carriages in wartime livery.
On the demonstration branchline, GWR 0-6-0 Pannier Tank 3650 in GWR Shirt Button livery was hauling the Carmine and Cream (or Blood And Custard) livery autocoach on the short journey from one end of the carriage shed at Burlescombe Transfer Shed (rescued from Didcot, a shed where in the 1800s, goods from standard gauge trains and Brunel's broad gauge would be transferred) to Didcot Halt (built with structures and relics from a number of different sources) at the other end near the engine shed.
In this video, we start off with 5322 on the 'mainline' on its journey to the south end of the centre from the station at Oxford Road. We then see it go off shed for lunch break, amongst 5051 Earl Of Bathurst, 4866, 1 Bonnie Prince Charlie and Thomas the Tank Engine (!)
We then move to the branchline and see 3650 operating the service between Didcot Halt and Burlescombe.
After its lunch break is over, we see 5322 returning to Oxford Road, alongside a Class 166 turbostar heading for Oxford. We then see it perform two run pasts, on the second a Freightliner 66 and Arriva Cross Country Voyager pass behind it)
I enjoyed my day at Didcot, a visit is well recommended and I will certainly be back in the summer. At Didcot you can look around the stored locos, visit the cabs of a few of them, have two rides* on a demonstration branchline, visit the carriage shed, look at a number of exhibits and exhibitions and learn all about the Great Western Railway in it's 175th anniversary. I would like to thank JBTEvans for the company and my parents for giving a lift to the station in the snow and rain.
Thank you for watching this video and reading this description!
