I saw this movie a few years ago and just thought of it again. I like how the filmmaker inserts himself into the story and makes it about him trying to recapture his youth by finding out why this reclusive author stopped writing. Instead, he realizes that you can't recapture your lost youth, and when you try, you inevitably end up disappointed. I also like the idea of the reclusive writer-- someone of talent who shared his soul with the world and retreated from the spotlight's glare.
I read Stones of Summer a few years ago after watching the documentary and enjoyed it very much, but I came away feeling a real absence of love between the characters. In fact, I'd say hostility was ironically the binding agent in the relationships depicted, which took on, particularly in light of the way the novel ends, the magnitude of a cosmic element.

This is one of the top 50 books ever written, I have been waiting 7 years for him to write something new, but I doubt it will ever happen.
