1010 has image stabilization and face recognition on photos and video..also records in SLOW MOTION! Its worth the upgrade.

the item you are asking about is a filter to stop or reduce any kinda noise distortion or video distortion leaking through the cable, and you do need them on to avoid any grainyness, if that's a word,lol...make sure you do some test footage and get it on youtube for us to see
