This is a demonstration of a new, never seen before Super Metroid speed trick, that allows to pass the very first heat room of Norfair with a walljump while not having the High Jump Boots, which is around 1 sec faster than the Bomb jump strategy that was used in all the previous TASes so far.

In order to work, this trick requires a extremely optimized subpixel position in both, the horizontal and the vertical directions before the final walljump, and on top of that a abuse of the turn around animation to reduce Samus hitbox when passing through the top hole without hitting the platform.

First time discovered by myself in November 26th, 2006 during the work on the any% run. Special thanks goes to Kejardon for giving me the idea with the turn around animation.

2nd independent discovery of this trick followed by Taco in March 24th, 2008.

Note:
This is a tool-assisted demonstration. More info at http://TASvideos.org/

  • you have knowledge about this game like no one else i know. how long do these slowed down precision speedruns take to do? it must be tedious.

  • Easily over a year if you want to make a new quality TAS/speedrun of a big and complex game that was never done before. It's not the optimization and execution of the techniques seen in the final run, it's the planning that is by far most time consuming, since you have to test all route possibilities, calculate ammo- and energy management ahead, and develop the fastest techniques and strategies for each situation from scratch on.

  • I think that glitch was already discovered by TACO before you, but can you tell me if i'm wrong?

  • I can tell you that you're wrong. If you look at the video description, you will see that Taco discovered it in 2008, while I did in 2006.

  • can you do that on real metroid or is it kind of cheat?

  • It's not a cheat. But due to the complex and very precise movements this trick requires in order to work, it won't be possible on console. It's a TAS only trick.

  • @daveeol Tool Assisted Speedrun

Tools being savestates, rewinds, slowdown, etc. options that you would find in most emulators.

  • what is tas?

  • how did you have the gravity suit then?

  • @SaturnTAS almost true. It is Difficult to do but still possible to do on the SNES. I have nearly pulled it off 4 times I just mess up the last Wall Jump

  • that looked hecktic my fastest time for this game is 49 mins (no TAS) and thats cause i get alot of extra items that i dont need but you sir are the best in my books. :)

  • I played it in bsnes some time ago, at 50% speed because my PC could not reach 60 fps. Clear time was ca. 50 minutes.

  • Amazing, the fastest time i can do on this game is 1hour 20 minutes ;( i can't improve it because i'm not fast enough
