The introduction of modern education is wrongly attributed to Lord Macaulay. In fact, all the enlightened people of India, all those who are credited with ushering in the Indian renaissance , Raja Ram Mohan Roy being the most prominent amongst them , vigorously campaigned for bringing the modern education to India. Despite a nationwide campaign demanding modern education the East India Company and British Parliament persisted in continuation of Sanskrit and Persian education in the country and spent all the government money on Sanskrit and Persian schools and colleges. Later bowing to public pressures some missionaries and individuals opened English schools in the country. Their number quickly increased. Long before Macaulay came to India we had already had hundreds of English schools in India. Thus, his role in the introduction of English education is negligible. It was a historical inevitability and it did well to our society.
However, the recent craze for English medium education is irrational and condemnable. It is a cruelty on small kids to teach them in a language not their own. This is a sheer madness. Very soon we shall see a generation coming up which may have certain skills but has received no education worth its name. Teaching a kid of four years in an alien tongue is a folly which no rational person can approve.
I DISAGREE, IT is all nonsense...kindly refer to the lord macaulay speech..."have travelled across the length and breadth of India .." and the speech is authenticated as you can check by googling...planning commission of india with the speech phrase......DONT MISGUIDE PEOPLE
