VIEW ROYAL -- Three new mothers have been isolated within the last 72 hours at Victoria General Hospital after contracting a vicious strain of Strep A. While none of their babies appear to be infected, all are being treated with anti-biotic.
New mothers are more vulnerable to infection because their immune systems are altered, and most suffer some kind of trauma from child birth.
All staff we're swabbed and say no unauthorized person is allowed in or out of the maternity ward. While each family is only allowed 2 screened visitors, and no children are permitted on the floor.
The Vancouver Island Health Authority says the ban on visitors will not be lifted until they are sure the virus has been completely eradicated. But at this time, they do not expect the virus to spread further.
