Kansans with concealed carry permits have never been able to bring guns inside of sedgwick county buildings. Wednesday that changed, as commissioners voted 4-1, Wednesday paving the way for all but, 27 buildings to allow concealed weapons.
"The people have the right to keep and bear arms and we shouldn't arbitrarily infringe upon that right," said Commissioner Richard Ranzau. Ranzau pushed hard for the issue and said this should've been done long ago. Commissioner Tim Norton voted "no." He said this has never been a big issue for his constituents before, and that there are more serious issues to cover.
"I think many of them would rather me solve the drainage issue on the south side that affects them everyday, than to deal with this issue," Norton said. The buildings that will allow weapons include 10 fire stations, the historic courthouse, and four county tag offices, but not the main courthouse.
Some think allowing guns is creating a dangerous environment. "I would not feel secure going into the tag office or anywhere knowing that anybody could go in with a gun," said Melina Martinez.
Ranzau said most of the opposition has been from people who are either mis-informed about the issue or don't like guns at all. District Attorney Nola Foulston spoke out in opposition of the resolution last week.
"This is a public safety issue, and one that could cause tragedy," Foulston said. Ranzau criticized her for the comments. "Any statement that alleges public safety will be jeopardized and an environment of fear will be created as a result of this resolution is not based on reality nor is it supported by the facts," Ranzau said. Ranzau said the fact is a right was being constrained by government and is no longer.
