Whatever happened to the Model City of the North: Kapuskasing, Ontario? It was originaly built from a central Circle with streets radiating from its centre as spokes on a wheel.
Being a one industry town, the pulp and paper industry has suffered a lot in the past years, with a worlwide surplus of that commodity.
Also young people are leaving for many reasons: to find work elsewhere (just like what is happening in the maritimes and in the prairies). The result is that the town is looking more and more like a retirement home, with no fresh ideas, and a dwindling amount of municipal taxpayers.
Like everywhere else in America, Wal Mart came to town. It's effect on the Circle was dramatic, now more than half the stores are closed, for sale, without buyers for years. And of the shops near the circle, at least 5 are hairstylists and 2 are video rental stores, practically side by side. It looks like a nightmare version of Michael Moore's movie Roger and Me, about the plant closure in Flynt Michigan.
walmart kills every mom and pop store, watch the real age of walmart, when sam walton started everything was american made, then the greedy kids took over and this is what happens.

So what would happen if some benefactor came in and bought every "For Sale" property?

I had attended the Queens Park demonstration to save Kap in the 90's. Sad to see the town like this, hope things have picked up. Havent been there in about a dozen years.

Munising, Michigan is going in the same direction that Kapuskasing is. All the young people here are moving out to places such as Milwaukee, Chicago, the Twin Cities and Green Bay, Wisconsin where the jobs are. Munisings population in 1960 was 6,000 people. Today it is 2,300 people. Just continues to bleed.
