As soon as you get off the ground, the flat underside of the car stops making downforce and turns into a giant wing. Just one of the downsides of these cars when compared to open wheel.

Formula cars are open wheeled.

Note how a "formula car" has no coverings over its wheels...

Not as badly. The total underbody area of any LMP prototype is much higher than most formula cars.
