FedEx Flight 705 was a McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30 ferrying electronics to San Jose, California, United States, that experienced an attempted hijacking for the purpose of a suicide attack on April 7, 1994. On that day, Auburn Calloway, a FedEx employee facing possible dismissal for lying about his previous flying experience, boarded the scheduled flight with several concealed hammers and a speargun. His plan was to disable the aircraft's cockpit voice recorder before take-off and once airborne he intended to kill the crew using blunt force so their injuries would appear consistent with an accident rather than a hijacking. After taking control he then planned to intentionally crash the aircraft into Federal Express' Memphis headquarters. Ultimately Calloway's goal was to maximize damage to his employer whilst appearing to be killed in an accident while still an employee, making his family eligible for a $2.5 million life insurance policy paid by Federal Express.

Calloway's plan was unsuccessful. The crew was able to fight back despite severe wounds, subdue him, and safely land the aircraft. An attempt at a mental health defense was unsuccessful and he was subsequently convicted of multiple charges including attempted murder, attempted air piracy, and interference with flight crew members receiving two consecutive life sentences. Calloway's appeal was successful in having his conviction for interference with flight crew members ruled as a lesser included offense of attempted air piracy. The crew was left with permanent, disabling injuries and have not flown professionally since.

  • Ironically, this is one of the few Dc-10's that didn't crash when faced with a dilemma. Cheers to the Crew on that flight! Hope that Callaway rots away in hole.

  • Instead of trying to kill other people for his failure at his job, he should just have killed himself. There is no excuse to try and hurt others because you don't get your way in life. There just isn't one, period.

  • @JUNKYARDOGvideos Im pretty sure your wrong! They said he might get 20 years, but he ended up geting lifetime.

Anyone else noticed that the flight engineer had blood on his head before the attack took place? Hahaha

  • @aerofores at that point, to go through the lengthy fuel dump checks and procedures on a DC-10 he wouldnt have had time to do that and get back to the controls without flying over the airport and having to go back. also the length of time they had wouldnt have let them dump enough fuel to make a big difference

  • i dont understan, if he was getting up to fight with his crew why could he not dump fuel?

  • Amazing to see how much damage/pressure a human body can withstand yet recover. Kudos to the flight crew. I guess being navy pilots helped them fight him back so bravely and to maneuver the plane in a way it wasn't designed to do.I never knew a commercial plane can recover from a 180 degree roll.

  • @beautyquenn101 It doesn't matter what his color is, what matters was that he was a man that committed a violent act people who had nothing to do with his problems. There are plenty of bad white people, Asian people and black people. Luckily the good of all races outweighs these nutcases.

  • everytime I watch a documentary about some evil scumbag abusing other peoples rights and distroying peoples lives, it always strikes me that the punishment they recieve is never realy that mutch. I do not belive that punishment is a good system, and I believe the true answer is to grow more moral people who would not act like this, but if you are going to have punishment it should ballance against the crime. for destroying the lives of three individuals this guy gets out at age 62. some justice

  • What a stunning piece of flying under the circumstances! These aviators are a credit to themselves, the industry and their country. Hats of fellas.

  • This man makes good black people look bad, he shouldn't have done something that makes Us look soooo bad. Everytime I see a black person commit a crime it makes me sad. I know people of other races have sone stuff like this, but maybe it because of how people think of black people, that makes me cringe when I see Us do such stupid stuff.
