i have a 96 explorer too it is the best truck they last forever if you take care of it with maintenance.

Tensioner pully or water pump needs to be replaced most likely

I don't know what the Serpentine belt is, but from my experience whenever there is a sound like that i was told its the belt.

serpentine belt!! yes, i have the 94 eddie bauer edition explorer and after i replaced the belt......WOW........it was gone ;) the belt is the easiest thing to remove as far as vital engine components goes. after you remove the belt, check to see if the tensioner pulley is loose or feels like it wants to "fall off" in your hand, that could be a culprit as well.
