I love this slow tempo, he is doing exactly the right thing to bring out the solemnity of the Marcia Funebre. And it's not a matter of counting minutes, because it's usually 18 minutes or so, whoever conducts. It's the way he constructs/emphasizes the structure.

En 1944 ils savaient que la guerre était perdue et cela rend la marche doublement poignante.

Dans la version dite de référence de Furtwangler de 1952, elle est moins poignante.

This is a very good performance, and it's quite strange to think that few months later, russians will attack Vienna...

Wow this was  played in Nazi Germany! Beethoven must have been rolling in his grave. I like the Gustavo Dudamel directing the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela better.

The Funeral March is perhaps the most beautiful musical movement. The most moving perforemance was done in the Beethoven Fest in 2007 in Bonn by Gustavo Dudamel and the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra. It just blew away the audience. You can see it on DVD, PROMISE OF MUSIC, Netflix has it. I was in tears.

i think with the sense of resignation to loss and destruction that is expressed in furtwangler's reading, and the hallmark formal sinewiness he wrests from it, this work almost jumps from second to third period LvB.
