Sunday - Channel 9 - Cat Le-Huy

Cat Le-Huy was detained in Dubai airport on January 26th this year for possessing melatonin -- a legal jet lag tablet, available over the counter around the world, including in Dubai.

His plight is being championed by a British group who maintain he is just one of many travellers who fall victim to the harsh - and by Western standards - unjust laws in this Arab country.

vegas has strict drug laws as well, but again the main point of contention was that he was detained on such small traces that would not convict you - even where the death penalty applies - in other countries.

I'm convinced the story is true, so I'm not going to argue that. However, similar stories exist in other countries too: in California (yes, the one in the USA) you go in jail for the rest of your life after 3 minor offenses... In the USA, innocent people have been executed.

the story certainly is true - i posted the story because I knew the person. the reason this was all so shocking is not because of the laws of the country (bali has the death penality) but because the person was detained due to minute traces of a drug that he does not use.

@awadmustafa - you cannot trust anything the authorities in the UAE say. The police can do anything they like. Unless you are friends with an important local you are at the mercy of the integrity of the police officers dealing with you. Maybe you will be lucky and reason will prevail or maybe you will be sitting in jail for nothing.

I beg all international journos please do not just run stories based on your own frame of reference, know what is going on and get your facts right. I am an expat working in dubai and i know how things go here so therefore avoid looking like fools and do some due diligence before coming on tv reports talking about the issues in a wrong manner and thinking that you have a great story!

Error number three. The poppy seed story was not only related to food consumed the person was held for suspicion for consumption of liqouer as well, the detainee was sentenced to serve time based on liquoer consumption and not the poppy seeds from the food.

Error Number two. As a journo in Dubai covering courts the press is privy to all case files in court and Cat LaHoy tested positive for hashish when tested according tot he case file, he was sentenced based on his consumption.

This is a sad sad report with many factual errors unfortunately. Error number one. When a person is arrested, prosecuted and jailed in Dubai they are held at Al Aweer prison, not Al Wathba prison. Dubai is an emirate with its own correctional facilities, Abu Dhabi is the emirate that has Al Wathba prison.
