It was a family affair the day that Rama Vaidyanathan gave a master class in the Southern Indian Classical dance style of Bharata Natyam (Pah-RAH-tah NAHT-yim) to students in NYU Steinhardt Department of Dance Education visiting Fulbright Scholar Alfdaniels Mabingo's Intercultural Dance Class. While her mother looked on, and her daughter demonstrated some of its fundamental movement, Vaidyanathan gave a class on the movement, elements and history Bharata Natyam, the divine Devi Dasis who not only interpreted, but lived the dance, and why it is an art form firmly rooted in the sublime.

The music in this piece was provided by Karaikudi Sivakumar on vocals and playing the nattuvangam--he is the beat keeper, as it were. Vikram Raghukumar played violin, Arun Kumar played a drum called a mridangam. Indu Sivankutty Nair also provided vocals. They are the musicians traveling with Vaidyanathan, and were recorded at the tech rehearsal held the day that she made her New York debut on Skirball's stage.
