This is a video of a Discovery Channel series called "Crash Files: Inside the NTSB" which show the NTSB's investigations of crashes and wrecks. This episode shows the wreck on the Sunset Limited, which was the derailing of an Amtrak train on the CSXT Big Bayou Canot bridge in northeast Mobile, Alabama, killing 47 and injuring 103, on September 22, 1993. It is the deadliest train wreck in the history of the United States passenger railroad company Amtrak.

  • Do you have the Crash Files episode regarding the San Bernadino / Duffy Street derailment? Been looking for it for years!

  • @cwr56 I've seen it a few times and recorded it. But that recording has been lost. I bought this video when they offered it on the Discovery channel, I wish I bought the others vids.

  • @StationAgent86

Let me know if you ever find it.

  • @cwr56 What I mean by lost is it was recorded over years ago. It's gone forever.

  • Its really eerie! I live but 5 miles from the accident. In fact I pass the same track on my way to bay minette on a regular basis. Chilling!

  • It didn't say anything about the girder part of the bridge not having stop plates, since it wasn't actually a swing bridge but one that could be converted if need be.

  • I also have this program on VHS somewhere in my collection. I taped it off of Discovery Channel when I saw it was going to be broadcasted years ago. This is a very sad and frightening story. I really feel sorry for the vessel operator who collided with that bridge right after that freight train crossed it with no problem. It has been said he has never been the same since this whole thing happened and after the NTSB concluded its report and determined the cause of the accident.

  • A well-produced episode. Objective and not overly dramatized. May our BLE Brothers rest in peace.

  • @StationAgent86 Yeah, I've tried contacting quite a number of folks over at Discovery, and they are pretty unhelpful.

If you find it again, Let me know. I recorded it years ago, but my recording is not exactly of the highest quality anymore.
