U2 said this song was inspired after they visited El Salvador,during the Salvadorian Civil War,when he mentions one hundred,2 hundred,he is talking about the US supporting the Salvadorian military that massacred people,when he says the city is groaning,that is San Salvador,as it was known during the war as"The City that Crumbles"and finally when he says the women and children run into the arms of America,he's talking about the half of the Salvi population that immigrated to US because of the war

if i were inclined to compare this song to ANYTHING....

it would be Jimi Hendrix. the bombastic, soaring, yet bluesy, and

soulful sounds emanating from Edge's guitar definitely invoke Hendrix.

(for me, anyways).
