Collector of vintage clothing, Marina Ivanova, plans to create a museum of fashion in Kyiv. And while this idea awaits realization, Marina has presented a part of her collection at the exhibition "Eternity of Romance." Our correspondent tell us more about the unique clothing and accessories of the Nineteenth Century.
One can learn about the fashion of the Nineteenth century not only from historical movies and old photos, but also by seeing such clothing firsthand.
Kiev designer Marina Ivanova presented her private collection of elegant dresses and ladies accessories that were popular in Europe almost 200 years ago.
[Marina Ivanova, Vintage Clothes Collector]:
"I'm a slave of this collection. I have to patch, darn, iron, restore."
The exhibition displays some of what was gathered by Marina over 30 years. Each dress has its own history and its purpose.
[Anna Varavva, NTD Correspondent]:
"These dresses of delicate batiste and lace were designed for walking. They were dressed on corsets, which tightened the waist to 50 cm. But what could not be done for the sake of a beauty?"
To create a more expressive silhouette women tied a pillow behind, called a bustle.
[Oksana Shevchenko, Exhibation Curator]:
"In the photos the last century there were women depicted in some reclining poses, not very natural, but very graceful. In fact, they did not take these postures on purpose. They simply could not just sit down properly, because of all these devices, so they had to recline on the couch in some unnatural position to relax a little."
Some dresses have a passport, and even photos of their former owner.
[Marina Ivanova, Vintage Clothes Collector]:
"This dress I got with a wedding photo. Why is that surprising? I bought it on May 27. When I turned the photo, I saw on the back that these people had a wedding on May 27, 1919. It was so touching for me, that I wanted to open a champagne bottle and celebrate."
This dress in the Venetian style made from green taffeta is a wedding gown too. At the end of the 19th century all shades of green were in fashion. And in 1870, some Hariet Hamilton wore it on the day of her wedding.
This part of the exhibition includes dresses of the 20th century. Perhaps the most friendly and forgiving to female beauty. Corsets were no longer popular. Dresses were decorated mostly with lace, stones, feathers and flowers. Silk, chiffon and satin were popular at that time.
[Marina Ivanova, Vintage Clothes Collector]:
"This is from 1912. I got this costume from America. It has very beautiful lacework blouse. Very nice high collar. At that time it was fashionable to wear very large hats, so the neck had to be visually enhanced. So here there are even supporting "bones" in the collar to protect it from falling flat."
Visitors to the exhibition have already found a dress to their liking.
[Natalia Mashoshina, Visitor]:
"Personally, I liked this one. I would put it on, if I were in that century. In my opinion, it is quite a beautiful dress."
The collection includes three dozen dresses, about a hundred hats and bags, and a dozen umbrellas.
The exhibition has presented only part of them. Marina hopes to put all the exhibits in the Museum of fashion, which is yet to be created.
