I used this to build a great antenna. But instead of dismantling the RCA antenna, I used it as is. 30-inch 2x4, build the UHF portion with 12-gauge copper starting 1 inch from the bottom, not 2 inches from top. Then mount the RCA antenna on top. Drill the hole in the middle and pass through the UHF wires. Then connect those and the coax from the RCA antenna to a UHF/VHF signal combiner. I planned to solder, but wasn't needed. 95-100 percent signal quality on all major network stations...

Excellent idea. I made the coat hanger antenna and it works great for me. This should help me pick up the one PBS station that I can't get now.

The reflector screen neds to be metal.

Great video! This is the modification of the "Coat Hanger Antenna" that I was looking for. But I have a question... the reflector screen has to be metallic or plastic?
is the signal combiner nessasary?

@marniemooful It works better with it than without it.

lol you tube has opened up so much free information. nice homemade kit you got going there but you can buy a high gain antenna for 35 bucks that can avoid all this time dedicated to this project. probably evens out in time vs money

@JppComputers I have tried a wide variety of indoor antenna ranging from $20 to $50, all different designs, and ALL of them have been really bad. This odd looking home made antenna is the only thing that I know of that actually works. Many of my friends and neighbors agree and use it as well.

OK, I found your video. So you're saying that a reflector does help with the UHF signal, right? How far behind the coat hanger wires should the reflector be? I ask this because I made mine on a 1 x 4 and I'll probably have to put some kind of a mounting on the back to hold the reflector.

@FNP3 All I know is that I used a 2 X 4 and it works fine. I have no idea what else might work. The reflector helped the UHF a lot. The only is that it makes the antenna more directional so placement is more critical.
