"In your opinion" is just tripe

Please can people just show a bit of character and accept an opinion for what it is: an opinion. There is nothing wrong with opinions. Indeed, all statements made by anyone are opinions. Therefore to point out that something is an opinion is not to lessen its power in any way. Newton had his opinion on gravity.

so are you saying all facts are opinions? but not all opinions are facts? if 1+1=10 (in my opinion). that doesnt mean it does. no about of belief makes something a fact.

or are you just stating that statements people make are opinions wether they are facts or not.

@lindybeige 10 in binary and 2 in a base 2 or higher system represent the same concept. "1+1=10 in binary" is like saying "uno + uno = dos en español", it doesn't disprove "1+1=2" as everyone is well aware of what language/base is being used.

In this context people really should be smart enough to infer the necessary. Although explicitly stating -IMO- does help convey your personal level of conviction on issues that may be contentious. There's also some discontinuity with social etiquette in the English speaking world, certain nationalities have an eroded grasp of plain speech and tend to get the underwear tangled by unnecessarily inferring that you're laying down gospel.

Sometimes, is good to tag "in my opinion" to a statement depending on your audience not necessarily for its literal meaning, but to soften the tone of the message.

The Internet is a great example of this. Because the Internet can't communicate irony or non-verbal, by using "in my opinion" your language comes off sounding more positive-minded and inquisitive rather than assertive. Thankfully, emoticons convey this thinking effectively, so stressing it's an opinion is not necessary.

Are people trying to make you say:"In my humble opinion" I guess they're meaning the fact that you realize other don't have to agree, but indeed its not needed to add.

We just have to learn to cope with narrowminded people.

And I think is pretty balzy you try to explain this, not to people how understand it, but the ones (whom you meant it for) don't understand it, I guess.
