@DickOPlenty She was referring to the deprivation of an opposing or varying viewpoint. How hard was that to listen to? As to lying openly, just listen to FOX or MSNBC. If anyone bases their opinions on that, then yes, that is the closest we've come to brainwashing on a mass media scale. But this happens only when we have a nation of non-critical thinkers, whose population is behind the world in math, reading, and science.

@totolondon yes those media are great examples of brainwashing. Starving the viewer of alternative points of view. Just repeat the same meme. That is the essence of brainwashing. Dictate the terms of the equation; the "discussion" HAS to fit a consistent framework: that of "free markets" being protected only under republican and conservative ideologies in mind, and "freedom-is-not-free" jingoistic sloganeering, intended to get out irish up against the foreign influence. Pathetic. Read real news

i hate it when people exaggerate things knowing better. the media doesn't brainwash people according to the very definition she gave. sensory deprivation? they do influence people obviously. repetition is key. having "experts" is usually effective even if they don't know shit & are just guessing. sometimes they lie openly. i never believed that before until i saw it for myself.

Made since 'til she said that we're "starved of alternative points of view". Complete and utter hogwash. Fox News is but one channel (two if you count their business network), and right-wing talk radio is confined to, well, radio. Conversely, "alternatives" (actually, mainstream) sources abound: CNN, MSNBC, The New York Times, NPR, CBS/NBC/ABC News, et al. SOME people think there is a link btw. al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein. SOME people think the US found WMDs. I don't think a majority think that.

Anyone heard of the MK Ultra program? Or the Phoenix program? Operation Paperclip? Scary stuff..

@Slipknotyk06 And that substantial difference is something called perception. One's perception of reality is what creates the differences. Life is a lesson, evolution is learning. If you learn to hate, you learn to evolve in that direction.
Brainwashing/indoctrination are truely one in the same, lest one's ideology interfere.

yes but your leaving out the fact that they are a segment of the population that is highly uneducated, low ave. IQ quotent, and are vuneralble to ANY and ALL forms of repetative messaging. Just the same as in every other country including CANADA... So there, is a slice of reality for you Naomi, SO WHAT! WHATS YOUR POINT? You just want to sell books and make money, your a shill.

@CAJUNNSC - We are easily capable of hate from birth. All it takes is a series of events where we are victimized and abused to create hatred. Hatred is not taught, but an evolutionary response, which is the driving force behind the outward expansion of the human race. The pilgrims were victimized and hated England so they came to America. Brainwashing, though, is a very different thing. There is also a substantial difference between brainwashing and indoctrination.

The sad thing is nothing she said will be listened to by the people who need to hear it the most.
