    - At the end of Heriage booklet: ""Slither" was recorded as a tribute in memory of Ronnie James Dio".

    - Mikael declared in a lot of interview he is a big fan of Ritchie Blackmore (guitarist In Deep Purple and Rainbow, which singer was Dio).

    - Opeth even did a live-cover of "Catch The Rainbow" when they learn Dio's death:

    ( watch?v=1-b3cRJDR-E&feature=related & watch?v=Nro9ewd_4u8 )

    - Moreover this song has a lot of similarities with "Kill The King" by Rainbow.

i think its their version of Kill the king.

The main riff is very similar in both songs!

It has nothing to do with production. It's what they wanted. Besides, sounding different is always a good thing. Their sound and style never gets old because they're always evolving. Another thing, even if it was recorded with a handheld recording, it's still the band.
