The Grande Messe des morts, Op. 5 (or Requiem) by Hector Berlioz was composed in 1837. The Grande Messe des Morts is one of Berlioz's best-known works, with a tremendous orchestration of woodwind and brass instruments, including four antiphonal brass ensembles placed at the corners of the concert stage. The work derives its text from the traditional Latin Requiem Mass. It has a duration of approximately ninety minutes, although there are faster recordings of under seventy-five minutes.

I was lucky to attend a performance and rehearsal of the Requiem in the Hague way back in the seventies. It was an incredible experience. The 4 brass groups were in the corners of the concert hall, which made the audience sit in between them and the orchestra and choirs. Amazing sound! The timpani's were situated next to each other in a long row. You could hear and see them rolling back and forth in big waves. Nothing comes close to that sound.
Only a genius like Berlioz could come up with a score like this.

  • @Chartoncreon You try singing this with 4 brassgroups, 14 timpani's and a huge orchestra!! As a matter of fact if you look at the overall balance, you would need a choir of about 500 voices to make them heard. And they are amplified on the recording. When I heard this live, the choir was huge but I had trouble to hear them half of the time! So yes, they will sing as loud as they can!!! There is no room for beautfiul singing here!

  • whats the painting called in the video???

  • @666iniquity The painting is Triptych with the Last Judgement of Hans Memling

  • @brexarevalo Tuba mirum is part of the Dies irae.

  • @shizabot I doubt it. Those are just trolls. They give thumbs down to any video. Regardless. Several hip hop and rap channels befriended me because they also like classical. I think it is a misconception that people only listen to one type of music. Most people I know are very eclectic.

  • @shizabot It's always sad to see people open minded enough to enjoy classical music, yet too closed minded to see how similar it is to hip hop. Seems like most of these people complain that it's too violent. Yet if you know the translation to the dies irae you would know that it is very violent. Symphony fantastic has drug abuse and a beheading. Art imitates life, and life isn't always pretty. That's fine if rap isn't your thing it's an acquired taste much like classical music.

  • Around 6:15, it sounds like the heavens opening when the high voices start sailing over the group. For some reason, I love that part. Also listen for the low strings around 4:15. I love that part, also. Overall, I don't know why people wouldn't listen to this.

  • @bartje11

    I like music.

No matter the genre, no matter the artist, if it can be considered music and not just noise, I like it.

Downside is, I don't know specific details. I don't know how the artist are called, and sometimes I even have trouble defining the genre.

It's a very mediocre way of appreciating music, but I'm happy.

  • @bartje11 True. I'm a rapper myself, and I love this piece

  • @shizabot : there's nothing to deal with it! I love rap, and I also fucking love it!
