@durdherd Because the Academy completely ignored Snow White the year earlier (though it did get a score nomination), which is insane considering not just how popular and widely loved it was, but due to what an amazing achievement Snow White is and still was. So, they gave Walt an special award the next year to make up for their idiocy.
I think we can all agree Snow White should have won best picture, but alas, the animation bias had already began early on.
Brilliant! BUT Snow White came out in 1937....
