A great version of this really catchy tune. Talking of "puff a little smoke", try the Robert Crumb and the Cheap Suit Serenaders posting. I love it.

Some night, Sing Song Lady
Puff a little smoke and sleep,
I come catch 'em up, maybe,
To my shop we'll creep.
Where you'll be mine,
I'll bet you all the tea in China,
Sing a little love song,
Sing Song Girl for me.

My Sing Song Girl,
My little yella Cinderella,
Tell me could there be a
Chinaman's chance for me?
Oh, Sing Song Girl,
Although I know you'd fool a fella,
Could you do a thing like that
To young Sam Lee?

Sounds like the outro music of some early Charlie Chan flick.

Hal Roach originally used the Victor "sound-on-disc" method in his "all-talking" comedies from 1929 through 1931- with that deal came Shield, who was, of course, affiliated with Victor...and this DOES sound like a typical music cue he wrote for Roach at the time....this was recorded for Victor in Hollywood on September 26, 1930 (only one of two sides issued under his own name).

LeRoy Chield was the A&R head of the (RCA) Victor recording studios in Los Angeles. He's also the same fellow who did the lion's share of the charts for the incidental dance music playing in the background of many Hal Roach "Little Rascals" or "Laurel & Hardy" comedy two-reeler. For renderings in full fidelity, check out the the Koch CD by the Dutch repertory band, the Beau Hunks
