I live in buffalo but when I was a little kid I use to here the hi lo siren and sometimes it would scare me lol it dosent any more
-
Lol, I'm pretty sure the "European" siren was made in America. btw. Our fire engine only has the 'yelp' and 'wail' sound... And it's made in Europe!
-
We used to call them hee haws.
-
@FlowVipTv I know I really wish we would switch to the Metric system. I hate the English system.

@Dorni2405 our ears...

the hilo siren is the main type here in germany... but some fire deparmends mix it today with wail/yelp. thats wired in out ears but it works...
so why not try new things??
and by the way...this hilo type here is the electronic one. nearly all bigger fire vehicles in germany use the air powered version. its much louder.
greets from germany ,dorni
Hi-Lo is the best siren out there period. It's proven to be the best siren for human ears to pick up on. Some of our ambulance units have them in Buffalo and people ALWAYS move out of the way for them.

I don't think the "two-tone" siren was invented until well after the war, and there are videos of old European fire trucks here on YouTube with mechanical "Q" type sirens. Its far more likely the other way round, war vets being traumatised by Qs, which sound like the WWII air raid sirens. But whatever the case, hi-lo and wail work far better than yelp in built-up areas!
