In his questions at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on Afghanistan, Senator Dick Lugar focused on the Pakistan/Afghanistan border, the need for strong Pakistani leadership and increased public diplomacy from the U.S. Senator Lugar asked Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Michael Mullen if they are prepared to talk with civil, military, and intelligence leadership in Pakistan about al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden in the boarder regions, and how quickly the leadership in Pakistan will come to "very different significant conclusions from the past in terms of their welfare."
