  • What is the white frothy stuff in the horses mouth in the photo around 09:15?

  • @Energiser01: That's foam, the whipped saliva of the horse that does'n or can't be swallowed in time (mostly because of the pressure on the tongue).

  • Oh is it? It looks really thick. How does the horse get rid of it? And this is again caused by pressure of the tongue. Thanks for your reply. Your channel is very educational.

  • @Energiser01: Yes, foam is harder to swallow than saliva, because it is quite thick and sticky. So the excessive foam can become like drool that flows from the mouth. Anyway, it's a sign that the horse can't make (enough) swallowing movements.

  • Is it quite common for a horse to have a foamy mouth then? It's sticky too? That must be quite uncomfortable for the horse to have that all over their tongue and around their lips? Oh right so it just goo's from of their mouth, they don't use their tongue to clear it or anything? Sorry for all the questions and thank you for all your answers. You have a great knowledge of horses and their bodies :)

  • A little foam is rather common and isn't so bad. But a lot of foam is not good. It's a sign that the horse can't swallow sufficient.

  • When there's saliva production and exercise at the same time (like training), it's difficult to swallow (you probably recognize that when people are sporting, they spit it out while training). Horses (and humans) can't swallow and breath at the same time, it's one or the other. And when there's pressure on the tongue, it's impossible to swallow; horses (and humans) need their tongue against the palate to be able to swallow.
