Midwest Watchdog - Sometime in the next decade we will see part two of the IT bubble collapse. Part one was the .com bust in 2001 where tech companies lost more than half their value overnight. Part 2 is the systematic replacement of IT workers with Internet Cloud Computing Applications and Services. This technology shift will be as impactful as the Twentieth Century transition from horses to cars only it will take place in one third the time. This will disrupt the economic norm and cause panic and possibly high unemployment for this type worker. Bill Gates and other CEOs have made you think you need to spend $1M/yr. on typewriters.

  • I've been in the computer industry for about 13 years. I've specialized in desktop, server, databases and programming. The big frear in the 90's was thin clients. That never took off. I don't really see this cloud technology taking over everything either. I can't see a company with it's ultra sensitive security needs and specialized programming needs just handing it over to some company that controls everything in some vague cloud controlled by a mysterious group of IT guys from India.

  • Me...over 20 years. Hard to believe but it will happen. Fortune 500 companies will ALWAYS have their own cloud so maybe this is what confused you. I am talking about SMALL business which is where most people work. They will be the ones going to the cloud and without risk.

  • So only 500 companies will not use cloud computing controlled from India? I've worked at lots of companies that are not fortune 500 that have huge IT departments. I'm sure they would not intrust their entire IT operation over to the mysterious cloud people from India. I think a thin client mainframe type approach could see a resurgence because companies always want to cut IT costs, but handing over the entire operation to India, I just don't buy it.

  • No, fortune 500 companies will be the cloud operators. Anyone else will be stupid to waste their money trying to catch up. Why do you use a Cisco router can't you make your own? The cloud will be the same way, you will want to use it because it will just work and will be safer just like a Cisco router is today.

The cloud will not be mysterious it will be the most secure environment. The India outsourcing is already happening the rest will in time.

  • Cloud Computing does not solve all company IT requirements just only some of them. So it is a partial solution to IT companies needs.

  • So a partial collapse , yes. Any collapse is always uncomfortable for someone.

  • So what can you do to cloud-proof your career? Do you think individual consumers will go for this as well on a large scale?...it seems like there might be some resistance there.

  • Actually, Cloud Computing is not likely to eliminate jobs... it's much more likely to transform IT jobs into roles that produce more business value.

  • totally fascinating, so this data cent could be an isp?

thank you, really enjoying the information.

  • Cloud Computing Thanks for the vocabulary
