A Google Earth fly-by tour of the U.S. Army's Sagamihara Dependent Housing Area, located in Sagamihara-shi, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, about 3km from USARJ HQ Camp Zama and 20km southwest of Tokyo.

The housing on SHA is for both military families and families of American civilians who work for the Department of Defense.

There are both attached and detached houses on SHA, ranging from two to four bedrooms and one to three bathrooms. Enlisted personnel occupy modern quarters that were built from the late 1990s forward. Officers are required to occupy post-occupation dwellings that were constructed between 1951 and 1955. Some of these quarters haven't been renovated since they were constructed. Other structures that have remained intact since the '50s include the base movie theater, snack bar (which originally included the PX in one wing), officer's club (now the community dining hall), beauty shop and specialty stores (formerly PX concessions), the steam plant, and community pool.

Incidentally, the accompanying music is Tim Weisberg and David Benoit performing "Kei's Song" (owned by Warner/Chappell Music). • That's where we lived (3:25) for nearly 2 years... S-213A. The red-tile roof duplex on the left. Even back in the late '60s, the trees were enormous and ideal for climbing.

  • One thing that's immediately noticeable is the stark contrast between on-post and the densely populated and sparsely forested off-post surroundings. As with most overseas military installations in Japan, Sagamihara was a virtual oasis of green. As a young boy, I enjoyed tree climbing and exploring the wooded areas around the base

  • Thanks man. It brings me back. From 1990 to 2000 I live at two places on the housing area. Some things change like the deli to the beauty shop. All I need know is a goggle earth of the places we hung out off base. Now that would be rad.

Also would be nice if any changes off base like there was on base. For example is the 7-11 still there and the arcades, dove store, and Jonathan restraint.

  • Good job Tom! ^^
