remember...our (alan ladd) loose cannon protagonist has just discovered his wife is drunk trash and selfishly evil...his frustration and anger is now a downward spiral toward violence...his family he thought he could return to was lost in ww-2 a casualty also! he is changing before our eyes! the dark rain is symbolic of his deep dark sadness!
