Brendan Laws talking labor issues at U of Houston 4 22.09

Brendan Laws has been a member of the University of Houston Students Against Sweatshops
( http://uhstudentsagainstsweatshops.wordpress.com/ )for a year and a half. He has been kicking ass and taking names since his first action back in November, 2008 when the then interim president John Rudley tried to wrestle him to the ground.

On Wednesday April 22, 2009 he spoke up at a Student Government Association (SGA) meeting about some of the labor issues on our campus. The SGA always takes the side of the oppressive administration because they only care about padding their resumes. A couple of weeks ago a new SGA took over and we asked them to stand up for students and against sweatshops. We met with the new SGA president the week before this meeting (they only meet every two weeks) and asked them to stand up for human rights. Of course they haven't done one thing but make excuses. Some of the SGA "executives" like the president, vice president and speaker actually get paid up to $700 per month out of our student fees to "represent" students.

No one actually cares about the SGA, (evidenced by less than 10% of the student body voting in the elections) but we like to cover all our bases and prove that we went through all the "democratic" processes. Over a year ago the SGA voted to sign on the Designated Supplier's Program (DSP http://workersrights.org/dsp/) but of course the administration, that is President Renu Khator ignored the SGA like she always does.
