The "final" battle of this immensely complex and huge game. I say "final", because the game actually doesn't end by your victory here, although this is probably the last boss you get to fight. The storyline leads you a bit further, but I'll leave the (slightly surprising) conclusion for you to reveal/recall.

The Dark Savant (or, in expert mode, Dark Savants - which is kind of funny in case of the central figure of the storyline) isn't a tough guy, as you can see. Or at least not for a ~70lvl party. A few maps before this dungeon there's a voluntary set of unique bosses ("Gorrors"), one of whom tends to be far beyond your abilities when you first get to him. I lingered around a while and exp'd up to be able to beat him. After that, the Dark Savant becomes a nanny's puppy.

If you're a fan of PC oldies and haven't yet played the game, I suggest you do so. Calling it just another square-step dungeon crawler is like calling an F1 just another form of wheel. It took me years of re-trying to finish the game and I can tell you those were playhours of finest-quality fun. Both pure RP-gamers and powergamers will definitely be satisfied.

An abandonware fan should also get acquainted with these channels (thank you both for inspiration!):

  • I see you have the sound effects working. Are you playing in Dosbox, I saw one of your tag is dosbox. I have a CD, and run under Dosbox fine, but the sound effects does not work properly. It's just a mess. The music is OK, not the sound effects. How did you manage to get it to work in Dosbox?

    Thanks.

  • @LJonathan Hi! Yeah, it's dosbox. I never had any trouble, so I can't give a direct hint. As a rule of thumb, try (if possible) updating your sound card drivers and dosbox. Also, try toying around with dosbox configuration: I used rate=22050, blocksize=2048, prebuffer=10 in [mixer] and sbtype=sb16, sbbase=220, irq=7, dma=1, hdma=5, sbmixer=true in [sblaster]. I had [speaker] on, but [gus] off completely. If sblaster emulation fails for you, try switching to [gus], I think Wizardry supports it.

  • @LJonathan Oh, and of course, don't forget to adjust Wizardry's configuration accordingly.

  • this video reminds me why i stopped playing. a few of my players stats were all at 99 and i couldn't raise them and couldn't leave or exit the level up screen. did you get a patch or something? man i want to play this again

  • @jwplater I do recall some patching, yeah...

  • I played this game 3 times in my life, with a distance of 6 years each time, and still i havent finished it. I guess its about time for the 4th one but this time with a walk through :D

  • @JustCallMeDan Go for it man! Definitely!

  • yay i can see a faerie ninja with the cane of corpus! :P

  • I totally love Wizardry 7 (and 8). It's taken me years and years of playing and I have NEVER got anywhere - the game is absolutley massive and feels never ending, not to mention massively difficult.

And now I need to play it again. AHHH!!!

  • so I didn't have to roll toons for 3 hours to get certain classes to start. Though strangely I didn't grab a fairy ninja, can't remember why. but I'm going to go look for that disk I have, if anyone needs a copy, msg me, I'll throw it on a torrent site or something for ya (happy I just remembered where my box of CD's are)

  • As far as the stats like that, WizGold allows you at the character edit screen to basiclly max things you want. Not saying he did or didn't since I can't find my disk, and really don't care if he did. Sadly I myself remember when i did get the disk, I used it to create certain charactes, while I could easily max everything, i just did it to the point I could level once and retrain to the class i wanted. I over did it the first time and it ruined the first part of the game, so i just did it

  • @Feiwill Thanks a lot! I used your dosbox settings and then changed the effect configuration from soundblaster to pc speaker and now it works very well.

  • Holy cow, the memories...I recall that I played that game so much by the time I got to the final battle my characters could Mind Flay one shot kill just about anything in the game. I think I remember fighting the giants most. They'd always say stuff about you being squishy food and whatnot...nostalgic sigh.

  • I had to get the patch, and use a hex editor, after all that I still had to use MoSlo and I got everything to work...although some of the text still went by pretty fast.

This game is enormous...which I think is a bit funny compared to the games nowadays. They might be pretty but Wizardry is a classic.
