Debra Jean and Kelly Sheets perform "Southern Girl's Reply" in the "Duet- Folk Song" category at the 83rd Johnson County Old Time Fiddlers Convention on 22 August 2008. This convention has been held every year since 1925 somewhere in Johnson County, Tennessee and it may be the longest running "old time" fiddlers convention in the southern Appalachians. For the last 17 years it has been held at the "Old Mill Music Park" in Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee.
This song was collected on the Outer Banks of NC (in the '30s or '40s) from Eleazar Tillet by Frank & Ann Warner (also collected "Tom Dooley" from Frank Proffitt ). Son, Jeff Warner, has recorded it, as has Pamela Goddard. Tune identified w/ "Bonnie Blue Flag," which confidently recounts the secession of the states at the beginning of the War Between the States. The use of the same tune for the deeply personally female tragedy at the end of the conflict only heightens the irony.
