Paul Hoekstra isn't just spinning his wheels when it comes to fighting poverty.

The Chatham resident and his wife Teresa are participating in the Sea-to-Sea bike tour to end the cycle of poverty.

They arrived home Wednesday after peddling 91 kilometres from Richmond, Mich., with more than 200 other riders. It is just one leg of the nine-week, cross-continental tour that started in Seattle, Wash., and wraps up Aug. 30 in New Jersey.

"Poverty is an issue that everyone struggles with," Hoekstra said of why he volunteered to take part in the lengthy journey.

"It says in the Bible that poverty won't go away, but we can try."
The Hoekstras and Chatham resident Cynthia Aukema, who is also participating in the event, raised more than $40,000 for the cause.
