The Gilbert & Sullivan Very Light Opera Company, of Minneapolis, writes new lyrics to a song from the show, and starts each performance with it, to tell people to turn off their cell phones. This is from our 2008 production, "Utopia, Limited." The performer, though playing the role of Sir Bailey Barre, has written lyrics to Capt. Fitzbattleaxe's "A tenor all singers above." • This is what I meant in my other comment about this series being awesome. Love it!!

  • @rosuav -- As I said re the Ruddigore cell-phone song, the singer of the cell-phone song is not necessarily the one who sings the corresponding song in the show. The Utopia cell-phone song (a version of Captatin Fitz-Battleaxe's "Tenor can't do himself justice" song) was sung by the guy doing "Sir Bailey Barre" and that's why he says "I don't do too much in this show" at the outset of the cell-phone song.

  • I've loved this every time I watch this.

May I suggest a slight change in the lyrics if you ever find yourself singing this song again?

Instead of "There. That will keep them from sounding," may I offer, "You see? That will keep them from sounding." It fits the music a little better because Sullivan wrote the music to match those words. The rest of the song is perfect, in my opinion. Thanks for uploading!

  • A superb idea! We did Utopia last week and we really should have thought of this!

  • LOVE it! Great performer, too.
