This is an overview of the remarkable rise of Dubai - an Emirate in the Persian Gulf - and illustrates a unique tourism and leisure-based economic development model. Surprisingly, the development model did not require native wealth (such as oil) for its execution and could also be successfully implemented in an apparently "troubled" region of the world.

  • PART II:

I also believe Dubai has played its geographic location, regional instability, and US/EU racism cards brilliantly. It sits at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa and leveraged its location to build a major seaport and airport. It harnessed instability in Middle East, Central Asia and South Asia by offering an oasis of calm and security. Finally, it implemented an easy visa regimen to encourage Asians to enjoy world-class amenities typically found only in US and EU.

  • PART I:

I am fascinated with Dubai for several reasons: (a) development of a non-oil economic model in a region totally dependent on oil, (b) execution of country's development model through utilization of mostly foreign financial and intellectual capital, (c) creation of world-class tourism, retail, leisure, sports, and real estate industries to drive growth, and (d) fostering of a cosmopolitan and tolerant atmosphere in a region known for extremism. And it did this in record time!

You fail to realize Dubai is one of the few Muslim cities in the Middle East where it's people embrace one thing: capitalism. They figured out hey, we are a oil-rich nation. Making lots of money and being a leader in world trade isn't is pretty nice. Come on, Roger Federer and Tiger Woods visit Dubai every year. Tiger Woods! So you know there are a bunch of fine Persian women in Dubai that Tiger can add to his list of hos.

  • @rudabeh its simple the westerners and there leaders don't want islamic states to progress thats why the westeners blow up there own building and then blame it on muslims to wadge wars/ crusades on countries like iraq, iran, pakistan palestine, Chechnya etc... the only good thing theres good at building is weapons of mass destruction

  • The people in this 21st century city have a 14th century mentality. You can't progress unless your mentality is progressive, which is something Muslims do not possess.

  • the most magnificent ruler.

  • Dead in the water now.
