This is the 9th investment that has been poured for a commission I have been working on for the past year. It is a 3/4 life sized sculpture of a cougar that will be installed in the atrium of New Prairie Middle School in New Carlisle, IN.

  • Lovely video. Could you tell us what the investment itself is made of.

  • Sure..the investment was made by using products one can purchase at many building supply dealers: Light weight expandable metal lathe formed into a cylinder, tar paper wrapped around the cylinder and secured with a rope for use as a barrier to keep liquid investment contained. GW moulding plaster, fine silica sand and of course water are the prime ingredients.

  • If surface detail is a concern, I begin the investment by brush applying an initial layer of jeweler's commercial investment to the exterior of the wax sculpture. At Fire Arts we have a series of standard containers that we use to proportionately mix the correct ratios of plaster and sand to water.
