really? you know Cantonese is phonetically closer to old or "real" chinese? did you also know that when you READ cantonese (as opposed to speaking), words are pronounced differently?
mandarin is heavily influenced by the northern invaders.

LMAO you guys are hilarious.
Both canto and mandarin are cool.
Canto is closer to the roots, if you know what i mean, but in HK its full of western rubbish. Also there is a reason why mandarin exists. With the countless dialects around Chinese couldnt even communicate among themselves, thus a common dialect was needed - mandarin.
IMO though mandarin is more formal than canto.

@Chinastar85 You are pok gai, fuckin mandogirl

@Ferior You've gotta be kidding. Actually I think the exact opposite. Whenever I hear Mandarin it sounds coarse, loud, and just plain obnoxious. Women sound like broken cymbals and men sound like ducks. Cantonese, on the other hand I associate with intelligence, grace and upper class. People also speak in a softer, deeper voice. I'm talking about Standard Cantonese in upper class Hong Kong circles and Mandarin from Taiwan of course. I also prefer German WAY over French so my aesthetic differs

@Notcoldsoup 谁管老外啊

Lol what. In Hong Kong, mandarin singers from Taiwan like Jay Chou are the craze. In Taiwan, we don't give a shi- about any HK Canto singers.

Mandarin is disgusting.
Cantonese is drop dead sexy.

Everybody knows that Cantonese is a much more sexier dialect than Mandarin. Mandarin sounds so rugged and uncivilized while Cantonese is much more beautiful sounding.

Mandarin is influenced by Manchu language.

Hong Kong people have more slang than people from Canton. Mandarin is spoken the way it is written. Cantonese is spoken differently than it is written. Cantonese have 9 tones over the 4 tones Mandarin have. More tones, more variety, more styles, and 100% WIN.
cantonese pwns mandarin, we av more tones ^^ and we still keep a lot of "ancient chinese sounds"

well if you ask most westerners they like cantonese more. It sounds less "ching chong."
