Today at the Department of State, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Foreign Minister of the Republic of Macedonia Antonio Milososki signed a joint Declaration of Strategic Partnership and Cooperation affirming the determination of our governments to further expand and deepen the partnership between our two countries based upon common goals, interests, and values.
On the basis of this declaration, both governments will seek to enhance their relationship and broaden cooperation across the range of our bilateral relations, including in the areas of security, people-to-people ties, and commerce.
The Declaration highlights the strong U.S.-Macedonian partnership in the fight against global terrorism and in promoting international stability, with our troops serving side-by-side in Iraq and Afghanistan. To build on this strategic partnership, we will seek to intensify our high-level civilian and military contacts, including increased joint training and exercise opportunities to enhance the inter-operability of our forces.
The Declaration underscores the United States' commitment to a sovereign, democratic, secure and prosperous Macedonia and to our shared values of peace, freedom, the rule of law, and free market economy. It reiterates the United States' longstanding support for Macedonia's continued security, stability and economic development on the path to full Euro-Atlantic integration, emphasizing in this respect that both countries look forward to Macedonia joining NATO as soon as possible.
