So recently i purchased a sword from lads at SwordNarmory, the blade is in hira-zukuri geometry and honestly for a sword that retails for about 140 bucks my expectations were not high.
When the sword arrived i was very surprised to see that it was made very professionally.Naturally koshirae are of lower quality, you really can't expect better for this price, but tsuka ito is very tight, folds are alternated, which by the way is a rare thing to see on production swords, fittings are perfectly tight and there is no rattle in the saya. When trying to dissemble a sword most production made swords have one anoying problem, you literally have to use a hammer to remove the tsuka or habaki,on this sword everything fits perfectly.
The blade itself is great,it has an amassing heat treat,i have cut the peg twice but the edge was completely unaffected as you can see in the video. All though the blade is tough it is not designed for hard targets,it is very thin, wide and extremely sharp, which makes it a perfect mat cutter. For anybody who is looking for a cheap sword for cutting you will NOT find a better sword than this, actually you might have trouble finding a better mat cutting blade whatever the price, the only thing that comes to mind is MAS Samgakdo that Kris (kfkonrad1) was testing, but that sword retails for about 1800 $,of course that's a L6 blade with great koshirae but when it comes to cutting i believe they are very similar, only bad thing on the blade is the fake hamon,i'll polish mine off,and remount the blade.
I highly recommend this sword for anybody interested in tameshigiri, here's a link for anybody that might be interested: http://www.swordnarmory.com/Yuki-Spring-Steel-Munetoshi-Katana-Sword-p/kh-181...
Today i only had a few mats, and was very tired so my cutting sucked,i also realized i only had one peg left and it was cut in half, and i was to lazy to make another one so the mats were very loose, but i have more mats coming next week and i will make another hopefully better video.
Sword specs are:
geometry-hira zukuri
nagasa-72cm
motohaba-37mm
sakihaba-30mm
motokassane-6mm
sekikassane-3mm
P.S.
The last part of the video the is the D.F. Bushi class Shobu zukuri katana, ito was too lose for my taste, and the diamonds very uneven, especially over menuki,so i decided to re-wrap it, for a blade that good it really deserves a better wrap.
Dear Revan,
firstly I'd like to congratulate you for your awsome cuts and videos.
Secondly, I'd like to ask you how you keep your blades sharp. Do you sharpen them by yourself or someone else does the sharpening for you? If you do it what do you use?
Thank you in advance.
