by Dibya Phuyal through Professor Rev. Dr. James Kenneth Powell II, opensourcebuddhism.org This piece investigates Sartre's (and Heidegger's) notion of "Existence precedes Essence", the hallmark doctrine of Existentialists. With a "be here now" attitude of the Buddhist, the Existentialist differs from the Buddhist in many significant ways, in spite of certain similarities. Existentialist anthropocentrism Nishitani will tell Sartre is just one of many exciting ways they differ.

  • You are most welcome. That book resulted in a pivotal change in my own thinking about so many things. Nishitani is an invaluable bridge between East and West. He helped me very much understand Sartre and Heidegger.

  • Yes, great video - however, like a couple of other posters said, the narrator is unclear - it might be better to post a link to the essay the narrator is reading.

  • good summary on Sartrean existentialism, but you speak way too fast almost to the point of making grammatical errors

  • Holy shit too fast, I got massacred.

  • great video thanks

  • FAG

  • Let me make a video...with content that is worth sharing...but let me speak so fast that no body can understand....c'mon man ....

  • This video frustrates itself.

  • Excellent topic and well-developed ideas. However, the presentation makes this just about unlistenable. a) way, way too fast reading and poor diction, b) delivered in monotone as if you have no convition of anything you are saying, i.e. not an existential or personal delivery but an abstract one, c) the editing is poor with frequent cut-offs of your voice.

  • We need an Alan Watts voice filter.

  • I'd be more prone to think there are great similarities between Heidegger and some Eastern thought if it weren't for Hubert Dreyfus whom I consider an authority on Heidegger. Dreyfus has stated he believes that there are surface similarities but once you get into it the differences become more pronounced.
